Georgia puts border guard troops on alert

TBILISI. Sept 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze has put the country's border guard troops on high alert, Major General David Gulua, deputy chairman of the Georgian State Border Protection Department, said on Tuesday.

Shevardnadze demanded that special attention be paid to the 81km-long Chechen section of the border, Gulua told reporters.

The decision to reinforce the border is a part of a set of decisions made by the Georgian leadership after the terrorist attacks in the United States, Gulua said.

According to him, the situation on the Chechen strap is stable and no emergency situations have been registered there lately. "Additional forces have not been relocated to the Chechen section, reliable control over the border is maintained without it, operative interaction with Russian colleagues is up and running," the official said.
