Moscow, NATO should coordinate efforts in combating international terrorism - DM

BRUSSELS. Sept 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told journalists upon his arrival in Brussels on Tuesday that Moscow and NATO should "coordinate their efforts" in combating international terrorism "in various areas, including cooperation between special services, and joint operations to curb financial flows and drug trafficking."

"Russia is a country that knows what terrorism is from its own experience. We have been waging a struggle against terrorism in Chechnya and in Afghanistan all through these years," Ivanov said. He also said that Moscow continues rendering aid, including military- technical aid, to the Northern Alliance, which is rebuffing the onslaught of the Afghan Taliban. "Nothing is new for us in the struggle against terrorism," said Ivanov.

He said that "no mechanism of cooperation in combating terrorism exists in relations between Russia and NATO."

"Unfortunately, to this day we have not understood one thing: the world has changed so much, and the challenges and threats have undergone such a radical transformation, that the old security system has found itself absolutely unprepared to deal with them," the Russian defense minister said.
