Federal officials have not met Chechen separatist negotiator

GROZNY. Sept 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Representatives of the presidential envoy in the Southern federal district Viktor Kazantsev have not met Akhmed Zakayev, who has been authorized by separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov to conduct a dialogue with the federal authorities, sources in federal government bodies in Grozny told Interfax on Friday.

However, they said Kazantsev's representatives contacted several of Maskhadov's representatives in the territory of Chechnya.

They said the contacts will continue. "The only subject of discussion is the termination of the senseless resistance of Chechen rebels," a source said.

In a Thursday interview Kazantsev told Interfax that his people had met Maskhadov's representatives, but refused to name the actual negotiators.
