Some 200 rebels are in Grozny - federal hq

KHANKALA. Oct 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Terrorist acts and subversive activities are still possible in Grozny, the North Caucasus military command said.

"Now, up to 200 rebels remain in the city. They operate in groups of five to thirty people," the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told Interfax on Monday.

Last week, rebel activity was registered in the Leninsky, Zavodskoi, and Staropromyslovsky districts of Grozny. In addition, subversive activities and terrorist acts became more frequent in the Shali and Vedeno districts, the headquarters said.

Last week, five federal servicemen were killed and 28 wounded in rebel attacks, Interfax was told.

"Rebels are conducting active reconnaissance to locate federal forces," the headquarters said. Locals sometimes take part in the collection of information as well, it said.

At the same time, law enforcement agencies and military commandants continue searching and destroying weapons stores. Last week, large weapons stores were found in the Shali, Argun, Kurchaloi and Nozhai-Yurt districts.
