Rebels based in volatile gorge commit new kidnapping in Georgia

TBILISI. Oct 4 (Interfax-AVN) - A Georgian man was kidnapped early on Thursday, and the traces of kidnappers once again lead to the volatile Pankisi gorge, a spokesman for the Georgian law-enforcement agencies told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The name of the victim is not disclosed. It is only known that the kidnapping occurred outside Tbilisi.

Forces of the Kakhety territory police department are engaged in a special operation to locate the hostage, the spokesman said.

An urgent conference is underway in the Georgian Interior Ministry.

According to the ministry's data, terrorists based in the Pankisi gorge are keeping two Spanish businessmen captured near the Tbilisi airport in November 2000. They are also holding a younger brother of famous Georgian soccer player Kakhi Kaladze.
