CIS national Security Council secretaries to discuss Afghanistan

MOSCOW. Oct 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The secretaries of CIS national Security Councils will hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss issues in fighting international terrorism against a background of the U.S.- led operation in Afghanistan, Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo told the press on Monday before flying to Dushanbe for the meeting.

Although the decision to hold the meeting was made by presidents of the Collective Security Treaty, other CIS countries will also be represented, he said.

The U.S. action in Afghanistan did not come as a surprise, Rushailo said. "Most countries support this operation," he said.

Rushailo reiterated the Russian position on the operation by quoting President Vladimir Putin who had said that Russia will provide information to the United States, maintain continuous consultations with CIS member nations, allow flights with humanitarian cargo through its airspace and, if needed, take part in search and rescue operations.

In response to an Interfax question Rushailo said that the CIS rapid deployment force has long since been placed on high alert.

The meeting will discuss the situation in Central Asia, he said.
