YEKATERINBURG. Oct 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The Volga-Ural military district took all needed measures to maintain combat readiness of its troops long before the start of the US anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, a spokesman for the district headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.
The district is a strategic group of permanent readiness and one of its tasks is to provide Russia's security on the Central Asian theatre of operations. Taking into account the fact that the United States is inflicting missile and aviation strikes on terrorist bases and other military installations of the Taliban movement, the air defence is the most hard-working part of the district's troops. According to the spokesman, at present there are no reasons to fear possible violations of the Russian air space.
Reports from the 201st motorised rifle division command say that the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border is under permanent control. The division is operating on high alert.
