Russian border guards testing Belarussian radio sets

MOSCOW. Oct 10 (Interfax) - Portable radio sets of the Rosa system are being tested by several formations of Russia's North-western regional border guard department, including those on the Latvian border, a Federal Border Guard Service (FBGS) spokesman said on Wednesday.

The radio sets were designed by specialists of the Belarussian Lyos company, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. The system comprise portable, automobile-based and stationary radio sets.

According to the spokesman, the radio sets were highly praised by FBGS communication experts. The new development allows to combine radio communication with access to telephone networks, he said. Nevertheless, the FBGS has not made a decision on purchasing a large batch of Rosas due to some peculiarities of the system's design.

The spokesman confirmed interest in continuation of contacts with Lyos. The Belarussian border troops are testing another development of Lyos, a Tsifra digital radio set, which by far surpasses current means of radio communications in efficiency and capacity and ensures enhanced protection of radio talk. The Belarussian border guards are planning to commission the device in 2002.
