Abkhazia regards Georgian troop movement to Kodori Gorge as start of war

SUKHUMI. Oct 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Fierce fighting between Abkhazian army units and gunmen from Chechnya and Georgia started in the vicinity of the village of Parnaut, in Abkhazia's Gulripsh district, on Thursday morning, Assistant to the Abkhazian President Astamur Tania has told Interfax.

A number of Abkhazian servicemen have been wounded, he said.

As for a statement by representatives of the Georgian Defense Ministry about moving troops under Tbilisi control into the territory of the Kodori Gorge to protect local civilians, Tania said, "the move legalizes the Georgian troops who came to Abkhazia together with Chechen terrorists."
