Smuggling activity growing on Russia-Kazakhstan border

MOSCOW. Oct 11 (Interfax-AVN) - An increase of smugglers' activity has been registered on the Russia-Kazakhstan border, a spokesman for the Russian Federal Border Guard Service (FBGS) said on Thursday.

Border guards thwarted over 100 smuggling attempts in September, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. Perpetrators attempted to smuggle goods worth a total of RUR11m (USD372,300) through the border. The total amount of smuggled goods seized this year has reached USD2.7m.

The number of smuggled agricultural products, mostly grain, has increased over 30 times this year, the spokesman stressed.

Other types of contraband are frequent as well. On Wednesday servicemen of the Barnaul border guard detachment detained two Kazakh citizens trying to export RUR1.5m (USD50,770) worth of computers from Russia illegally.
