Russia names new deputy foreign minister

MOSCOW. Oct 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Anatoly Safonov has been appointed a Russian deputy foreign minister.

Safonov, who has become the 13th deputy foreign minister, will be in charge of terrorism-related issues, Interfax learned on Friday.

Several years ago he was first deputy director of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

On Friday, Safonov, as a deputy foreign minister, met Irish Deputy Foreign Minister David Cooney.

The two deputy foreign ministers, who met in Moscow, "exchanged opinions on problems of international terrorism related, among other things, to the issues in Afghanistan and Chechnya," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
