Northern Alliance establishes control over 10% of Afghanistan

DUSHANBE. Oct 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The Northern Alliance in Afghanistan has established control over more than 10% of the country's territory.

Military sources in Dushanbe told Interfax on Tuesday that forward units of the anti-Taliban coalition have reached the outskirts of Kabul. In addition, the units of General Rashid Dostum have entered the suburbs of Mazar-e Sharif, where street fighting is underway with Taliban fighters.

Interfax sources say the advance of the Northern Alliance in Afghan territory was facilitated by the air attacks of the United States and its allies. "During the past few days, powerful air strikes were delivered on Taliban positions in the areas of Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif. B-1B strategic bombers and naval aircraft were involved in the attacks," a source said.
