Northern Alliance plans to seize Kabul, Mazar-e Sharif before Ramadan

PANJSHIR, Afghanistan. Nov 1 (Interfax-AVN) - The military command of the Northern Alliance has discussed plans for storming Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif in their Panjshir-based headquarters.

A military source in the Alliance told Interfax on Thursday that they may seize control of Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif before Ramadan, the Moslem holy month.

The units of General Rashid Dostum, which are besieging Mazar-e Sharif, have been reinforced with several thousands of volunteers from local villages, most of them Khazars, Uzbeks and Tajiks, an anonymous Afghan general said.

The Northern Alliance's forces on the approaches to Kabul have also been reinforced with volunteers and reserve servicemen from the Badakhshan province.

The anti-Taliban coalition has not launched active combat operations, but is wearing down the Taliban with position fire exchanges, the general said. However, the units are ready to carry out missions and they are waiting for the order to begin the offensive, he said.
