MOSCOW. Nov 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian units lost 3,438 servicemen dead and 11,661 wounded in Chechnya between the start of the anti-guerrilla operation on October 1, 1999 and October 10, 2001, an official in the Russian presidential information service reported on Thursday.
In particular, Defense Ministry units lost 2,136 men dead and 5,763 wounded, while Interior Ministry's units lost 1,196 dead (493 of them interior service personnel and 703 servicemen of the ministry's troops), and 5,399 wounded (3,107 of them interior service personnel and 2,292 servicemen of the ministry's troops). Other units lost 106 dead and 499 wounded.
In that period, nearly 11,000 rebels were killed, the report says.
"Among them were field commanders Arbi Barayev, Ramzan Akhmadov, Magomed Tsagarayev, "Brigadier Generals" Baudi Bakuyev, Ali Dimayev, Khunkar-Pasha Israpilov, Abusupian Movsayev, Lom-Ali Nunayev, Movladi Khamzatov, Lecho Khultygov and others, and also numerous Arab mercenaries, in particular the commander of a group of Turkish mercenaries Abu Bakar, an activist of Al-Haramein, an extremist Islamic organization, Abu Darr, Khattab's deputies Abu Yakub, Abu Hakim and Abu Samad, international terrorist and close associate of Osama bin Laden Abu Umar, and an official of the Al-Badr terrorist organization, Jaffar a Yamani," reads the report.
Dozens of medium and lower echelon illegal militia commanders have also been killed, the report says.
In that period, gang leaders Lom-Ali Baisongurov, Turpal Movsayev, Vakhaa Murtazaliyev, Salman Raduyev, Apti Kharayev, Lechi Shavayev and Kharon Yunusov, "Brigadier Generals" Abu Arsanukayev, Turpal-Ali Atgeriyev, Omar Tuyev, Nasruddin Bazhiyev, Khalid Dadayev, Lechi Islamov, Idris Matsalgov, Ibragim Saidov, Mumadi Saidayev, Vakhid Timayev, Ali Shabazov, Khusein Edilsultanov, Ramzan Yusupov, Abu and Apti Yukhigov and numerous others were taken prisoner.
