Defense Ministry rejects attempts to link anthrax cases in U.S. to Russia

MOSCOW. Nov 2 (Interfax-AVN) - An attempt to link anthrax cases in the United States to Russia is "absolutely hopeless," a Russian Defense Ministry official said.

It is laying the blame on others, the head of Radiation, Chemical and Bacteriological Defense Forces, Viktor Kholstov said.

Kholstov recalled an instance when Russia was accused of helping Iraq create chemical weapons. However, "the trail led to the West," he said.

The development and implementation of biologic programs that are inconsistent with the convention banning biologic weapons has been prohibited in Russia, he noted. "Russia does not possess biologic weapons, it never developed or stockpiled them," he added.

Moreover, Russia "advocates a new and efficient mechanism of controlling a ban on the creation of biologic weapons. One of its priorities is to turn a convention banning biologic weapons into an effective international document," he said.
