Belarus to hold large-scale tactical exercise in 2002

MINSK. Nov 2 (Interfax-AVN) - The Belarussian Armed Forces are expected to hold a regular complex tactical exercise in 2002, Major General Sergei Gurulev, the forces' chief-of-staff, said on Friday.

The exercise will be of no lesser scale that the Neman 2001 war games which took place from late August to early September this year, Gurulev told Interfax-Military News Agency. Those games involved about 10,000 servicemen and over 1,600 pieces of ordnance.

According to Gurulev, a major goal of the exercise is to check capacities of the bodies that the Belarussian Armed Forces are establishing, them being the General Staff, Land Forces command, unified command of air force and air defense troops, and two operational commands of theaters of operations.

The same goal will be pursued by a command staff game that is scheduled for early 2002, the official said.
