GROZNY. Nov 8 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian military report that Chechen rebels have escalated mine planting activities in the troubled republic.
Engineering reconnaissance units of the Ministries of Defense, Interior and Emergencies defused 75 landmines in Chechnya in September and 116 in October, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry department for the breakaway republic told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday. Rebels have planted 15 mines in Gudermes and 24 mines in the Shali district in the past month.
Federals registered 26 blasts of ordnance and civil vehicles in October. According to the spokesman, the activities of terrorists can be explained by the fact that the rebel leaders have recently got a lot of money to pay for terrorist acts.
