DUSHANBE. Nov 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Several experts have expressed serious concern over the military and political situation in Afghanistan and described it as "hardly predictable."
Given the current disposition of warring parties in Afghanistan, the anti-Taliban coalition's possible capturing of Mazar-e Sharif and Kabul "will not become a real victory," a military-diplomatic expert told Interfax in Tajikistan.
While the Taliban controls the three northern Afghan provinces of Takhar, Baghlan and Kondoz, the Northern Alliance's rear forces "are facing a serious threat," the expert noted. The Northern Alliance is advancing towards Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif.
Even if it captures these cities, the Northern Alliance will fail to retain them because the Taliban will encircle the Northern Alliance from the rear and southwest and cut off support bases.
Moreover, the Northern Alliance is making the mistake of stretching its forces along the entire frontline. Instead, the Northern Alliance should concentrate all forces and reserves in the secure Panjsher gorge and deliver a rapid strike against Talib formations in the Baghlan, Takhar and Kondoz provinces before proceeding to Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif, he pointed out.
