Chechen rebels attack army, police units 93 times last week

KHANKALA. Nov 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Chechen extremists fired small arms and grenade launchers at army and police units 93 times last week including 52 times in Grozny, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

The highest rebel activity was registered in the Leninsky and Straropromyslovsky districts of Grozny and the Shali district of the breakaway republic. The number of attacks increased in Argun and Serzhen-Yurt. Extremists who earlier operated in rebel groups of warlords Barayev and Salamov stepped up their activities near the Yermolovsky and Alkhan-Kala villages. According to the military, the fact evidences that the rebel groups partially restored the control and support system.

Federals carried out 86 search operations in the republic last week. They destroyed 36 extremists, 15 rebel bases in mountains on the east of the republic as well as 421 illegal oil refineries. Servicemen busted 122 caches seizing 105 pieces of small arms, 161 grenade launchers, eight anti-tank guided missile systems, 923 rockets for the rocket launcher, 60kg of explosives and some 202,000 cartridges.

During the operations federals detained 116 vehicles which had been hijacked or had no documents.
