Northern Alliance takes control of two more Afghan provinces

DUSHANBE. Nov 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Afghanistan's Northern Alliance on Wednesday advanced into two more Afghan provinces, notably Nughar and Gardez, the deputy military attache of the Afghan Embassy in Tajikistan told Interfax.

The Northern Alliance controls the provinces of Badakhshan, Tamanghan, Bamian, Balghur, Parwan, Takhar, Nughar and Gardez, Abdulkhalil Bakhtier said.

The Taliban retains the provinces of Lashkarghar, Kalod, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Laghman and Kunar.

On Wednesday morning, fighting resumed at the strategic mountain crossing of Tera, 50 kilometers southeast of Kabul. If the Northern Alliance captures the Tera crossing linking Kabul and Jalalabad, it will cut off the Taliban's route to the Pakistani border. Taliban supporters in southern Afghanistan and certain Pakistani provinces send troops, arms and ammunition via the Tera crossing.

At present, the frontline lies 45 kilometers east of Kabul near the village of Sorobi. Local residents fled to the mountains on Tuesday night.

Heavy fighting is underway in Kandahar. The Taliban is using missiles in its fierce resistance. Civilian casualties were incurred, according to unconfirmed reports.
