Guerillas wound Russian peacekeeper in Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone

SUKHUMI, Abkhazia. Nov 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian peacekeeper Roman Sharipov was wounded in a hand last weekend when unidentified people opened fire at the 302nd strongpoint of the collective peacekeeping forces in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone, a spokesman for the forces headquarters said on Tuesday.

The stronpoint called Mestia-Khaishi is located near the Khudoni village in Georgia's Zugdigi district, not far from the volatile Kodori gorge, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The fire was inflicted on the strongpoint from two directions, and a rocket was launched to signal the beginning of the attack, commander of the forces Major General Nikolai Sidorychev told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The Russian peacekeepers fired back at guerillas which numbered 10 to 20 people, Sidorychev said. According to him, two APCs and 40 peacekeepers were sent to the site immediately after the attack.
