Russian deputy PM promises support to Yantar shipyard

KALININGRAD. Nov 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The Yantar shipyard will start the production of a series of large landing vessels in 2003, Kaliningrad Region Governor Vladimir Yegorov told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

Yegorov met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry, Science and Technologies Ilya Klebanov last past week to discuss the situation at the shipyard. According to Yegorov, Klebanov promised the increase of funds for the production of the Yarloslav Mudry large landing ship. In particular, the government will provide up to RUB211m (USD7.05m) instead of RUB15m (USD501,354) promised for next year.

The vessel is 78 percent ready and RUB1.3bn (USD43.45m) is needed for its operational development.

Moreover, the shipyard will receive an order for the production of large landing vessels, and the work on the program implementation will start in 2003.

As to the Novik vessel which has been manufactured by Yantar for several years, the government made a decision to cancel its completion. Contrary to media forecasts the order will not be transferred to the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg and the Yantar shipyard is to decide what to do with the vessel on its own.
