MOSCOW. Nov 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The Federal Agency of Government Communication and Information (FAPSI) believes it is necessary to use Russian intellectual cards for establishing a system of personal identification and increasing the efficiency of measures being taken against international terrorism, FAPSI Deputy Director General Viktor Pyarin said on Tuesday.
The result of the FAPSI's activity in the sphere of designing Russian intellectual cards makes it possible to develop and start using an electronic machine-readable document providing cryptographic protection of identification data, Pyarin told Interfax-Military News Agency.
The data written into the Russian intellectual card can be protected from forging by both cryptographic and holographic methods, and complex application of the three protection technologies will make it possible to establish a multi-level system of verifying the citizen's ID card, the official stressed.
According to Pyarin, the use of intellectual cards in the manufacturing of identification documents is a promising sphere of activity in the world. In particular, the U.S. Defense Ministry and British secret services have issued electronic documents on the basis of intellectual cards to their employees.
The U.S. leadership has instructed the Pentagon to issue 4.3 million cards to employees of the Defense Ministry. About 600 million microchip plastic cards are already in use in the United States.
Application of cards for establishment of a personal identification system will enhance efficiency of measures being taken against international terrorism, the deputy director said.
FAPSI benches at the Intellectual Cards of Russia 2001 show provide an in-depth outlook on the possibilities of using intellectual cards. The show opened at Moscow's Hotel Kosmos on Tuesday under the auspices of the 4th international forum on payment cards in Russia.
