U.S. senators discuss military-technical cooperation in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT. Nov 20 (Interfax-AVN) - U.S. senators said Washington is ready to give Uzbekistan military-technical aid and help the republic overcome the ecological crisis in the Aral Sea.

Senators Carl Levin and John Warner, who are currently on a two-day visit to the republic, made this announcement at a press conference following their meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov in Tashkent on Tuesday.

The senators and Karimov discussed issues related to military cooperation and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. In particular, they discussed the possibility of opening the Friendship bridge on the Uzbek-Afghan border, not far from the town of Termez, Levin said. This would speed up the delivery of humanitarian cargo to Afghanistan, he said.

Senator Warner said that the Uzbek authorities are very seriously considering the question of opening this bridge, as it is very important to the anti-terrorist coalition.
