NATO, Russia should have mechanism of anti-terrorist cooperation - Robertson

MOSCOW. Nov 22 (Interfax-AVN) - NATO Secretary General George Robertson has called for developing a mechanism to improve the anti- terrorist cooperation between the North Atlantic Alliance and Russia.

He made the statement upon his arrival in Moscow on Thursday.

Robertson said that NATO and Russia are capable of building renewed relations.

As for possible NATO-Russia negotiations in the "20" format,Robertson said there is a number of problems NATO and Russia could discuss in this format if the relations are mature enough and they have a relevant political will.

If NATO and Russia start to develop such relations, they will have to make sure of the mutual striving for doing that, Robertson said.

With the existing international anti-terrorist coalition and it would be silly to miss this chance, he noted.

Asked which topics could be discussed in the "20" format, Robertson said the fight against terrorism is the top priority. But there are other problems Russia and NATO share, among them the non- proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, he added.
