Russia, Afghanistan work out humanitarian cooperation strategy

KABUL. Nov 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Emergencies Ministry and the Afghan government have agreed on joint actions to render humanitarian aid to the Afghan population, deputy minister Valery Vostrotin told the Kabul press on Wednesday after a working meeting with Afghan Minister Inoyatullo Nazari.

"We discussed the cooperation strategy and worked out a plan of joint actions on humanitarian issues," Vostrotin said.

He said two Emergencies Ministry planes will arrive at Bagram airbase on Thursday. "The first will bring a mobile hospital and 2.5 tonnes of medicines and medical equipment, and the second will bring food aid that will be handed to the Afghan authorities," he said.

"The volume of humanitarian deliveries will increase in the future," Vostrotin promised.

He said Russia intends to help the Afghan government restore the strategic Salang tunnel to guarantee the uninterrupted movement of humanitarian convoys.

In addition, more refugee centers are to be set up.

Russian experts are also ready for operations to de-mine Afghan territory, Vostrotin said.

In his turn, Nazari said that Russia is the first foreign country to start actual humanitarian deliveries to Kabul. "Many have promised help, but so far, only Russia has actually been helping," he said.

He voiced hopes that after the opening of the Russian humanitarian center in Kabul, other countries will also join the effort.
