DUSHANBE. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Mawlawi Mohammed, a commander of the Northern Alliance, and leaders of the local Pushtun tribes, among them field commander Hamid Karzai, started negotiations in a Kandahar suburb on Thursday, the office of the military attache of the Afghan embassy in Tajikistan has told Interfax.
The Anti-Taliban coalition demands the disarmament of all units in Kandahar and the city's surrender to governmental forces, the military diplomat said. The negotiations are progressing with much effort, he said.
A group of Taliban commanders surrendered to the governmental forces on Thursday morning, the diplomat said with reference to hitherto unconfirmed data.
More than 15,000 Taliban are in Kandahar at present. The shooting at Taliban bases in the city resumed on Thursday morning. In some places the shooting developed into clashes, the Afghan diplomat said.
The Northern Alliance is searching for the remains of Taliban units in the provinces Ghazni (in the north) and Zabol (in the south). Northern Alliance intelligence says that about 3,000 armed supporters of the Taliban are scattered in the two provinces.
