Russian Northern Fleet to have new generation submarine

SEVEROMORSK. Nov 30 (Interfax-Northwest) - The submarine Gepard will be transferred to the Northern Fleet early in December, a fleet headquarters official told Interfax on Friday.

The Gepard, or Shark-2 in NATO classification, class of submarines are third generation, nuclear-powered, multi-purpose submarines, an upgraded version of the Bars submarines.

Submarines of this class are considered among the fastest and least noisy in the world. In addition to mines and torpedoes, they carry 28 RK-55 Granit cruise missiles with the range of up to 3,000km.

The Gepard was to be commissioned six years ago. However its transfer to the fleet was delayed by irregular funding.
