Special computer system to detect drug addicts among draftees in European Russian region

VORONEZH, European Russia. Dec 6 (Interfax-AVN) - A special computer system will be used for detecting drug addicts among draftees in the Voronezh region starting from 2002, a spokesman for the Voronezh regional military commissioner's office told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

The region's administration issued a regulation allocating some RUB300,000 (USD10,013) for the systems' purchase. The funds will be allocated from the budget of a regional purpose-oriented program entitled "Complex Measures Aimed at Prevention of Drug Abuse and Illegal Drug Turnover in the Voronezh Region for 2001 to 2003".

A source in the administration specified that the funds would be spent not only on the systems' purchase but for teaching doctors to use them as well.

The Voronezh region authorities do not have full information on the number of drug addicts among the local youth, the source told Interfax-Military News Agency. According to unofficial data, over 70 percent of young men aged 15 to 25 years have tried drugs at least once.
