Navy chief introduces new Northern Fleet commander

SEVEROMORSK, Murmansk Region. Dec 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Navy Commander Vladimir Kuroyedov introduced new Northern Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Gennady Suchkov to fleet headquarters in Severomorsk Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Admirals and officers of the complex group of the Navy command bodies arrived here on Monday to inspect the fleet headquarters, departments and services, as well as headquarters of units and vessels. Results of the week-long inspection will be reported to Kuroyedov.

Deputy Navy Commander Admiral Mikhail Zakharenko has been appointed representative of the Navy commander in the Northern Fleet for the transition period.

A Navy commission dispatched to help Suchkov take over the command has started working at the fleet. It will round up its activities on Saturday when Suchkov is to address the fleet command and assign missions for the training year 2002 to all command bodies.

In his speech Suchkov will also tackle violations committed by the previous fleet command during preparations for the training voyage in 2000. The Kursk nuclear submarine sank in that voyage.
