Russia is sure term for chemical weapons destruction will be extended

MOSCOW. Dec 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia has no doubts that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will extend the period during which Russia must destroy its chemical arsenal.

Vladimir Rushailo, secretary of Russia's Security Council, told its members at a conference on Tuesday that Russia has lodged an appropriate request with the anti-chemical weapons body, and "there is no doubt the executive committee of this organization will meet Moscow's request."

"Russia now has every chance to meet its chemical weapons' destruction commitments," said Rushailo.

Russian stockpiles a total of 40,000 tonnes of chemical agents. In keeping with an amended plan, this amount will be scrapped in several stages. Russia intends to destroy it all by April 29, 2012.
