KHANKALA. Dec 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Two powerful radio- controlled landmines blasted in Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martan district over the weekend, killing one federal soldier and injuring seven, a spokesman for the unified federal headquarters said on Monday.
Engineer units defused 14 landmines in Chechnya last week, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. They seized 154kg of explosive devices and 18 artillery and mortar shells prepared by extremists for use as landmines. The highest guerrilla activity was registered in Grozny and in the districts of Achkhoi-Martan and Shali.
Extremists have had serious problems with recruiting people for carrying out terrorist and sabotage acts in Chechnya lately in the wake of several successful operations of the federal troops, the spokesman said.
