KALININGRAD. Dec 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Navy Commander Vladimir Kuroyedov arrived in the Kaliningrad region on Tuesday to inspect vessels and units of the Baltiysk naval base, a spokesman for the Baltic Fleet headquarters told Interfax- Military News Agency.
Kuroyedov has handed the admiral's straps to fleet commander Vladimir Valuyev. Later in the day he will hear Valuyev's report on the results of the first weeks of combat training and meet heads of the fleet's leading services and departments, the spokesman said.
The navy chief is expected to fly to St. Petersburg on Wednesday to attend a session of the Naval Board under the Russian government. The session chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov will focus on conceptual issues of the Russian Navy development in the 21st century, the spokesman said.
The Naval Board was set up in September 2001. Its chairman is Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, Klebanov is his first deputy, while Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov and Kuroyedov are deputy chairmen.
The board's charter says that its main missions are coordination of activity of federal executive bodies, executive bodies of Russian regions and organizations in the sphere of preservation and perfection of the country's naval potential. The board organizes development of projects and analysis of naval activity taking into account geopolitical, military-technical and economic factors of strengthening and mounting the naval potential, rational use of forces and funds in World Ocean exploration.
