Tests of new satellite navigator completed at Russian Radionavigation and Time Institute

ST.PETERSBURG. Dec 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Tests of the new KS- 161 navigation receiver have been completed at the Russian Radionavigation and Time Institute, Director of the Institute Sergei Pisarev told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.

Pisarev said the KS-161 could be used for both civilian and military purposes; for example, it can be employed for satellite navigation of ships, aircraft in peacetime and military operations. The unit can also be used by servicemen of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces and Land Forces. The new satellite navigator enables its operators to determine co- ordinates of a moving object and its speed. It is capable of operating in the Russian GLONASS, U.S. GPS and European Galileo global positioning systems.

The decision on the KS-161 satellite navigator entering the inventory of the Russian army will be taken in the wake of its field tests to be taken in 2002, Pisarev said. He added that further development and serial production of the navigator would be conducted by the Navigation and Time Informational Technologies Consortium to be set up by the Russian Control System Agency.
