Russian specialists begin clearing obstructions in Salang tunnel in Afghanistan

KABUL. Dec 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Specialists from the Russian humanitarian center in Afghanistan are beginning to clear obstructions blocking the southern portal of the strategically important tunnel in the high-mountain pass of Salang.

Another Russian aircraft landed at Bagram airfield on Wednesday morning, the Russian humanitarian center's administration told Interfax. The plane airlifted 24 mine- clearing specialists with necessary equipment from the Russian Emergencies Ministry and 16 tonnes of food and medicines.

In the near future, the Russian experts together with Afghan personnel will begin clearing mines and obstructions from about 70 meters of the tunnel's southern section.
