Afghanistan's leader pleased with Russian humanitarian aid

KABUL. Dec 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Hamid Karzai, head of the Afghan interim government, on Monday told the Russian delegation to his inauguration that he is thankful to Russia for the prompt humanitarian aid to his country, an official in the Russian humanitarian center has told Interfax.

Talks are underway in Kabul between the Afghan government and Russian Emergencies Ministry officials on cooperation in the setting up of a fire service in Afghanistan, an Interfax correspondent reports.

The Russian hospital in Kabul has treated 2,285 patients and performed 11 operations. The clearing and repair activities in the tunnel under the Salang mountain pass are underway. Russian engineers and Afghan construction workers had advanced nearly 150 meters from the southern entry of the tunnel by Sunday evening.
