MOSCOW. Dec 25 (Interfax-AVN) - The destruction of Russian anti-personnel mines that had been stored at the facilities of the Russian operational grouping in the self-proclaimed Trans- Dniestr Republic has been completed, a spokesman for the headquarters of the Moscow military district told Interfax- Military News Agency on Tuesday.
More than 26,000 anti-personnel, special-purpose and trap mines were destroyed by blasting. In addition to that over 300 heavy shaped charge projectiles and more than 3,000 explosive devices were scrapped.
The spokesman said the removal of excessive munitions launched on December 1 was still under way. A total of 12,000 tonnes out of the 42,000 tonnes of munitions stored at the facilities of the operational grouping is to be transported to Russia.
As many as 26,000 more tonnes of munitions are to be scrapped in accordance with the trilateral agreement signed by Russia, the OSCE and the Trans-Dniestr region. The agreement provides for construction of a scrapping plant in the vicinity of the city of Tiraspol.
