DUSHANBE. Dec 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 200 British peacekeepers are expected to arrive at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, a source in the Afghan embassy in Dushanbe told Interfax-Military News Agency.
After the arrival "the British servicemen will be flown by helicopters from Bagram to Kabul, where the single base of the international peacekeeping forces is located," the source said.
The vanguard of the peacekeeping forces comprising 150 British marines has already been deployed in Kabul.
The source stressed that the British servicemen would form the core of the peacekeeping contingent in Kabul. The contingent's mandate authorizes its stay in Afghanistan for six months after the inauguration of the country's interim government.
According to data made available to Interfax-AVN, peacekeepers will guard Kabul in close cooperation with Afghan law-enforcement bodies. Besides, they will carry out humanitarian operations.
