Payment for Russian base stationing in Tajikistan out of the question - military diplomat

MOSCOW. Dec 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Payment for stationing of the Russian military base in Tajikistan is not discussed at the ongoing Russian-Tajik negotiations, a military diplomat told Interfax-Military News Agency in Moscow on Wednesday.

The treaty on the Russian military base in Tajikistan has been ratified by parliaments of the two countries, the diplomat said. "The document contains no references to payment for use of land or facilities by Moscow," he stressed.

The parties have yet to agree on the terms of the Russian troops stationing in Tajikistan. "After this issue is resolved and the parties exchange ratification notes, the treaty on the Russian military base in Tajikistan will come into force," the diplomat said.

Tajikistan and Russia are equally interested in establishment of the base, he stressed.

According to military diplomatic sources, the 201st motorized rifle division permanently stationed in Tajikistan will form the core of the base. The division's regiments headquartered in Dushanbe, Kulyab and Kurgan-Tyube comprise a total of 6,500 servicemen.
