Russia to continue humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

MOSCOW. Dec 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia will continue aiding Afghanistan by rebuilding hospitals and roads, in particular the tunnel under Salang mountain pass, jointly with France and Britain, Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu told a news conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Traffic through the tunnel may resume next February, he said.

World Food Program cargoes will arrive in Afghanistan's town of Faizabad from Kyrgyzstan's Osh; other humanitarian aid will reach Afghanistan from Tajikistan across the Panj river, Shoigu said. A new ferry crossing is to be built in the vicinity of the settlement of Nizhny Pyandzh, he said.

Nearly 420 tonnes of goods are in Tajikistan, Shoigu said. Nearly 80,000 tonnes of supplies, notably tents, stoves for tents and bed clothes for Afghanistan have been amassed in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, he said.

Russia wants only to see a peaceful life rebuilt in Afghanistan, and the inflow of narcotic drugs from that country stopped, Shoigu said.
