STAVROPOL. Jan 3 (Interfax-AVN) - A 50-year old citizen of Azerbaijan was detained on the Russian border when he attempted to enter Russia using fake documents, the headquarters of the Dagestan separate checkpoint said on Thursday.
The Azerbaijani was riding on a train from Baku to Ukraine's Kharkiv. He was detained as soon as the train entered the Russian territory through the Tagirkent-Kazmalyar checkpoint located in the Dagestan autonomous republic, a spokesman for the headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency.
Servicemen of the North Caucasus regional border guard department detained over 600 people using fake documents on the Dagestani border section alone last year, the spokesman went on. A total of 2,000 violators were detained on that border section. Border guards seized 40 pieces of firearms, over 400 pieces of ammunition and RUB100,000 (USD3,280) worth of smuggled goods from the detainees.
A drug trafficker was apprehended by a border guard picket at the Askaraisk-Zheleznodorozhny checkpoint on Wednesday, the headquarters of the North Caucasus regional border guard department told Interfax-AVN. The 45-year-old citizen of Tajikistan riding in a Dushanbe-Moscow train transported about 100g of heroin in his stomach. The detainee was transferred to law-enforcement bodies of the city of Astrakhan.
