12 rebels killed in Chechnya's Argun

ARGUN, Chechnya. Jan 8 (Interfax-AVN) - Twelve rebels were killed in an armed clash with federal troops in Argun on Monday.

Seven of them were killed in fighting and five others were buried under the rubble of a building in which the rebels had been based and which was destroyed by federal troops, the Argun police told Interfax on Tuesday.

A weapons arsenal that belonged to the rebels, including an anti-tank grenade launcher, a machine gun, five automatic rifles, a pistol, a hunting rifle, 17 grenades and a home-made bomb, was discovered on Groznenskaya Street where the clash had occurred.

Fourteen local residents were detained on suspicion of cooperating with the rebels.
