TSKHINVALI, South Ossetia. Jan 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of a Russian battalion forming part of the mixed peacekeeping forces in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone are clearing snow on the Caucasus highway, chief-of-staff of the forces Alexander Paraskeva told Interfax-Military News Agency on Wednesday.
"Military vehicles are delivering foodstuffs to the people who are trapped by the snow at the Roksky pass, besides, they are involved in clearing the highway from snow banks and towing civil vehicles," Paraskeva said. Moreover, Russian servicemen provide technical support to the local authorities in establishment of radio communication.
The Georgian and South Ossetian battalions of the peacekeeping forces are also operating at the site, Paraskeva said.
The Caucasus highway will be closed for traffic for at least two or three more days, for there is still a danger of avalanches, a spokesman for the South Ossetian government told Interfax-Military News Agency.
