Commission of Land Forces command starts checking North Caucasus military district

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Jan 10 (Interfax-AVN) - A commission of the Land Forces command launched a complex inspection of the North Caucasus military district troops on Wednesday.

The commission is led by Chief-of-Staff and First Deputy Commander of the Land Forces Lieutenant General Alexander Morozov, a spokesman for the district headquarters told Interfax- Military News Agency.

According to the spokesman, the commission inspected the 22nd special-purpose brigade on Wednesday. Over 70 servicemen of the brigade went AWOL on November 29, 2001. Colonel Alexander Chechetenko, head of the Land Forces department for political work, is instructed to assess the state of political work in the brigade.

The inspection group accompanied by the district's chief-of- staff Colonel General Vladimir Bulgakov will inspect units of the 20th guard motorized rifle division on Thursday, the spokesman said. The division is headquartered in Volgograd.

Also on Thursday, the group will check the Kamensk- Shakhtinsky garrison, where two soldiers shot dead six fellow servicemen on guard before going AWOL on July 8, 2001.

Later the commission members will go to Rostov-on-Don, where the district is headquartered, to study activities of the district's administration, headquarters, departments, services and training center. They are to inspect a field engineer unit and other military units.

The commission includes generals and officers of the Land Forces main combat training department, operations, mobilization and logistics support departments, troops service and service security section, as well as engineering troops and air defense of the Land Forces.

The spokesman said the commission was to round up its activities on Saturday.
