18,000 conscripts to joint Belarussian law-enforcement agencies in January

MINSK. Jan 10 (Interfax-AVN) - About 18,000 conscripts will join units of the Belarussian Armed Forces and other law- enforcement agencies this month, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

Some 13,000 raw recruits will serve in the Armed Forces and some 5,000 in the border guard and Interior Ministry troops, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Some 30 percent of potential recruits were considered unfit for service due to poor health during the autumn 2001 draft. Less than one percent of potential recruits are dodging the service. The figures are similar to those of previous years, the spokesman said.

The last batch of conscripts is to leave for their future units no later than January 31.
