Russian pilots ready to airlift Danish peacekeepers to Afghanistan

MOSCOW. Jan 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Commanders of Russian military transport aviation units ordered to airlift Danish peacekeepers to Afghanistan have reported readiness to get down to the first stage of the operation, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

Crews of three regiments forming part of the military transport aviation are assigned the mission to deliver all Danish peacekeepers to their destination by the end of January.

Readiness of the crews is to be checked next week, the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency. About 20 crews of IL-76 Candid planes are standing to fly to the Chkalovsky airfield in the Moscow region for completion of preparations for the mission and for the check of their readiness.

The operation will be managed by military transport aviation commander Lieutenant General Viktor Denisov.
