Ukrainian parliament supports probe into illegal arms sales

KYIV. Jan 15 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The Ukrainian parliament has supported the inquiry of deputies Grigory Omelchenko and Anatoly Yermak addressed to Prosecutor General Mykhaylo Potebenko and Director of the Security Service Volodymyr Radchenko to check the sale of arms to the Taliban government in Afghanistan by Ukrainian officials.

The inquiry states that the web site of the German weekly Der Spiegel carried an article under the headline "Arms for the Talibs?" The article quoted Russian Duma deputy Viktor Ilyukhin and Russian security experts as saying that Vadim Rabinovich, a national of Israel, together with former Ukrainian Security Service director Leonid Derkach and his son Ukrainian parliament member Andriy Derkach transferred military hardware to the Taliban.

The inquiry says that "these and other media publications on illegal arms trade by Ukrainian officials have aroused strong public feelings that may undermine the prestige and authority of Ukraine on the international arena and badly damage the national security of Ukraine."
