GROZNY. Jan 18 (Interfax-AVN) - A series of attempts on high- ranking officials, law enforcement servicemen, and regular civilians has been perpetrated in Chechnya over the past 24 hours, the interior department for Chechnya has told Interfax.
An armed group of people fired at a patrol car carrying two members of a special riot police unit (OMON) in the Naurskaya district. Chechen OMON Commander Vakha Mairbekov died from his wounds.
Unidentified gunmen shot and killed Senior Police Lieutenant Isa Gakhayev at his home in the village of Stariye Atagi in the Shali district. The killers seized his service arms and fled.
In Mesker-Yurt, rebels fired on a car carrying Chechen Deputy Prime Minister Ali Alavdinov. The car, with 58 bullet holes, overturned and the driver was gravely wounded and taken to the hospital. Alavdinov did not suffer any injuries.
A new assassination attempt on head of the Argun city administration Movsar Temirbayev was staged. His driver Said- Magomed Varayev sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was brought to the military hospital in Khankala.
In Grozny's Leninsky district, local civilian Muskhady Visaitov was killed by an automatic rifle. Several people were also killed in Grozny's Zavodskoi district and in the Shelkovskaya and Shali districts of Chechnya.
