Russia ready to take part in post-conflict reconstruction projects in Afghanistan

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia intends to take part in projects to rebuild Afghanistan that are being mulled at an international conference in Tokyo on the post-conflict rebuilding of that country.

Russian Deputy Emergencies' Minister Yuri Brazhnikov told Interfax on Monday that Russian experts are ready to use their experience in mine clearance in Afghanistan and help restore economic facilities. Russian doctors will continue assistance in developing the health care system in Afghanistan.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ordzhonikidze, who is participating in the Tokyo conference after meeting head of the Afghan interim government Hamid Karzai, told reporters that Kabul is interested in Russian assistance in restoring power supplies, the construction of irrigation networks and the mine clearance of the territory.

Brazhnikov said that after emergency humanitarian and medical relief is given to the Afghan population, his ministry will emphasize deliveries of humanitarian cargoes and participation in post-conflict restoration projects.

He said a ministry transport unit consisting of 30 KAMAZ trucks and an air-borne hospital operating in Kabul have been given over to Afghanistan.

Brazhnikov said the Russian embassy in Kabul will coordinate Russian post-conflict restoration efforts while the mission of the Emergencies' Ministry emerging in Kabul will coordinate concrete humanitarian projects.
