DUSHANBE. Jan 21 (Interfax) - A new ferry line across the Pyandzh River on the Tajik-Afghan border has started to function.
The line, which opened in the vicinity of Nizhny Pyandzh on Monday, is a gift of the Russian and German governments to Tajikistan, the task group of the Russian Ministry for Civil Defense and Emergencies in Tajikistan has told Interfax.
The line will transport humanitarian cargo for Afghanistan to the Afghan port of Sherkhan. A ferry is capable of transporting four high-capacity trucks weighing a total of 100 tonnes simultaneously.
Now that the ferry line and the tunnel across the Salang mountain pass are open, the delivery time for humanitarian cargo from Tajikistan to central and southern provinces of Afghanistan will be reduced, the task group said.
